Coming Soon – Car Photography 101

by Neill on June 26, 2009

roadwmOk, so we’re on the road and I’m now fully into Car Photography 101. I’ve quickly realised that it’s a huge undertaking, far bigger than I first thought. Stuff I kind of took for granted and thought not worthy of comment, others found really interesting, so Car Photography 101 has been delayed and here’s why. The reason is due to a re-write to include some stuff that I thought people would probably already know, but didn’t, and also to include some other stuff that helps people who don’t have a DSLR, but still want to take great car photos using a compact camera.

So the opening Car Photo 101 will be a basic one to show how even the most basic compact camera can be used for car photography, including action shots and how decisions on shutter speed and aperture influence a car photograph. You may well know a lot of the stuff, but take a look, it might just be a memory jogger. I’m trying to roll all this out on a regular basis, in between normal work, shooting and researching other features and writing content for my other motoring sites, so if I slip behind, scream at me in public and demand more. Alternatively, I’ve just started a Flickr group for Driving Images, so head over there, join up and post some of your car shots and tell us how you took them.

Tell Me What You Want

If there’s a particular aspect of car photography you’d like to discuss, add a comment at the end of this post and I’ll try and include it in Car Photo 101. Future subjects will include choosing lenses, specialist gear used for car shooting including location lighting, strobes and car rigging gear, finding locations for car shoots and all the different aspects of shooting action including panning, tracking, hard cornering and shooting motorsport. Phew, that’s a lot of stuff and I’ve only scratched the surface.

More 101 please! I’m working on a list of questions and issues I have encountered. I’ll try to get it posted here soon. I hope you continue with the series and I hope others take advantage of your generosity in sharing your expertise!

All the Best,
James
