Powershot S100 – An EOS the size of your iPhone

by Neill on September 15, 2011

I still have fond memories of my first Ixus compact camera. It really was ‘compact’ unlike many that use that name. It would fit into my jeans pocket, so you really would take it with you when you headed out. For many people iPhones have taken the place of that type of camera and there’s no denying that the iPhone 4 has a very good camera on it, both stills and video, but for me, it doesn’t give a photographer the chance to get a quality image that you may see when you’re out without your EOS. That’s just changed with the announcement today of the Powershot S100.

A look at the specification and it ticks all the boxes that I could possibly think of for a truly pocketable stand in for those times when my EOS must remain behind:

24mm wide angle end of the zoom
f2.0 lens with built in 3 stop ND filter to let you use the aperture
ISO 6400 processing from the DIGIC 5 processor
12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor
RAW file shooting mode
1080p video recording
Optional waterproof case
A lovely brushed aluminium case that reminds me of my long lost Ixus

Just a handful of reasons why I think I’d love it. The RAW file shooting will fit in with any photographers workflow and being able to shoot video at 24 fps in 1080p HD will make it a great B Roll and shoot from the hip camera. It would be quite cool to try a car photo shoot with one, so we’ll get back to you as soon as it’s possible to do it.
