Quick post today. Here’s an interesting video by wedding photographer Carlos Baez, shooting some supercars in his studio. Some stunning cars to shoot for the local supercar owners club, The Palm Beach Driving Club. You can see the finished shots on his blog here
I‘ve had an idea in my head for more than 2 years now about shooting a car video on The Isle Of Man, so when I heard about the latest Mercedes SLS Fast and Famous movie, I was really excited.
There’s been a buzz going around the internet about the next video in a series of virals and short movies about the Mercedes SLS being produced and bit by bit, details are emerging of how it was done, where and when we can see it. [click to continue…]
Following last year’s popular event, we’re teaming up once more with Canon UK and The Flash Centre to bring another car photography workshop. Full details and information on how to book your place can be found on this page of The Flash Centre website but breifly, here’s a few snippets:
We’re sticking with the superb venue of Yorkshire Air Museum and the vast expanse of Elvington’s concrete runways for action photography. Supercars this year are provided by Specialist Cars of Malton, so who knows what exotic machinery they will bring on the day! Places are limted to just 15 people to ensure lots of access to the cars and Canon staff will be on hand with a large selection of lenses and equipment, together with The Flash Centre’s excellent Elinchrom location lighting gear. The date is 17th September, so click the link to book a place before it fills up.
Camera bags are very personal things, what works for one person’s job / gear pile just won’t cut it elsewhere, so what follows is a purely personal rant / review of some of the great and not so great bags I’ve had over the years.
I’m a lightweight gear person. Sure, when I need to, I can fill a car with the very best of them, but as I spend a lot of time alone, without a crew of sherpas to help other than a poor long suffering journalist waiting to get behind the wheel, I try and pack as much as I can into just one or two bags and travel light. Additionally, in today’s Jobsworth World of airline travel, I refuse to check anything that might be of value or vital to the job. And I avoid certain airlines who only allow you to carry on a credit card and toothbrush – you know who you are…
Ok, so here it is at last. I’ve been promising for more than 12 months now to launch a definitive website dedicated to both the art and the industry of car photography, so here goes.
The previous domain name of Driving Images is now firing a good old 301 re-direct over this way, so if you came via that, welcome! When a domain name this good comes along, you don’t think twice… So what are we all about?
Car Photography – The Art
Great car photographers create great art. We aim to showcase and interview automotive photographers worldwide and get their thoughts on their work, what they like, what makes them tick. We’ve already started with my friends Tim Andrew in the UK and Mark Scheuern in North America, but we’ll be adding video interviews soon too.
Car Photography – The Industry
We want to talk to the other people involved in automotive photography. Everyone from the grips and assistants to the gear manufacturers, the rig guys and the people who commission and use car photography – the magazine editors, retouching and CGI houses, car manufacturers and PR people. We want to hear your thoughts and viewpoints.
Car Photography – The Gear
We know you love it and we couldn’t do our jobs without it. Gear and gadgets and how they’re used in car photography. We’ll be reviewing the gear we use and reporting on everything from a roll of gaffer tape all the way to the latest Canon hybrid HD-SDLR’s and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo with a Russian Arm. We know you’ll want to see it.
Car Photography – The Techniques
If you’re a fan of car photography, our Car Photography 101 series will help you improve your car photography, get the best from your existing gear and help you work out what to spend your cash on and when.
Car Photography – The Forum
Forgive me if there isn’t one yet, I think you’ll agree the list I’ve made above will be a lot to dig through, but we’ll be adding a forum soon.
Anyone with any misgivings whatsoever about the quality of motion footage delivered by the Canon 5D Mk2 needs to watch and listen to this Behind The Scenes of the shooting of the hit TV series 24. All of the background plates for driving sequences were shot using this killer car rig on a whole brace of Canon 5D Mk2′s.
Rodney Charters, DOP comments in the movie, “These cameras will be big players in all production in the future.” All the ‘plates’ for the latest season of 24 were shot on 5d’s and the newer 1D Mk4′s and now they’re moving into using them on principal photography.
If you’re still thinking that these cameras are stills cameras ‘That Happen To Shoot A Bit Of Video” then wake up and smell the coffee.
As for the car rig…. As Will Smith said, “I gotta get me one of those”
No excuses here, I’m a Porsche fan. Not exactly head over heels in love with the Panamera, but this advert has so much more. Take a watch and see how many different models you can see…. Love to see a Behind The Scenes of that one…
Here’s a couple of really interesting videos. I’m an admirer of Jay Leno and his automotive passion – boy that guy can buy cars…. These two videos show him driving the new Mercedes SLS AMG around Beverly Hills. A nice short movie, but the more interesting of the two is the Behind The Scenes vid [click to continue…]
This great vid by Bandito Brothers has been screaming around the internet and we’d love to make contact with them for an interview. Take a killer combination of BMW M3, gorgeous girl, the Canon 5D Mk2 and some great rig shots in stills and video and this is what you get. For me, this is [...]
Unpacking all my gear after a shoot in North Yorkshire recently I stared in shock at the gap in my Lowepro where my 550EX usually sits. It took a second or so as I mentally rewound to when I last had my hands on it, then groaned….
